Newport’s £100m Friars Walk retail and leisure scheme was today granted planning permission by the Welsh city council’s planning committee.

Queensberry Real Estate, the spinoff from the UK arm of Multi Developments, had applied to demolish existing buildings in the John Frost Square area and to develop a scheme which will provide more than 330,000 sq ft of retail and restaurant space in the city centre as well as a six-screen cinema and a new bus station.

With consent now granted, the scheme is scheduled to start on site next year.

Councillor Ed Townsend, cabinet member for regeneration, said: “This scheme is making substantial progress and is one of only four shopping centres in the UK currently going forward.

“While we in Newport know only too well that there can be no guarantees, I think we have every reason to be positive as all the pieces are now slotting into place to make Friars Walk a reality at last.”
