Queensberry Real Estate has announced its appointment as Development Manager Organisation (DMO) for the Better Barnsley town centre redevelopment scheme. QRE won the mandate working alongside its partner Turner & Townsend, who are acting as project managers. The announcement comes as Barnsley council is celebrating the next major milestones in its regeneration ambitions.

This partnership with a DMO presents the council with the best opportunity to secure not only the successful development of phase two of the Better Barnsley scheme but also private sector investment into the scheme, along with the realisation of the council’s potential future return on investment.”
The DMO will work with the council over an 18 month period to design the new leisure and retail units; begin the pre letting to retail and leisure operators and work with the Council to secure private sector investment to build out the second phase.

Henry Boot Construction Limited will deliver the construction phase of the Better Barnsley scheme and will provide a permanent presence in Barnsley throughout the scheme which includes the construction of retail, leisure and market space, including areas for food and drink a new library and new landscaped public open space (the Market Square), following the demolition of existing buildings.

The Metropolitan Centre will also be extensively refurbished and extended to create a significantly improved presence for the real heart of the town – the markets. The total Better Barnsley scheme, combined with additional public realm improvements and the development of a brand new college building, brings the total town centre investment to £100m.
The DMO will work with Barnsley Council to secure private sector funding from a property company or institutional investor to build out the second phase of the Better Barnsley scheme, developing approximately 200,000 sq ft (net) of new retail and leisure space on the plots created as part of the demolition undertaken for Better Barnsley phase one. This exciting element of the scheme will bring new shops restaurants and leisure facilities to add to the new library, public square and refurbished market.
