April’s Blog written by Sebastian Thomas, Development Project Manager at Queensberry
I am the newest addition to the Queensberry team, having started in October 2020. I was drawn to working with Queensberry because their drive, ambition and genuine desire to transform towns and cities into better places is something I knew I wanted to be part of. Joining mid-pandemic was always going to be a challenge, however, I was fortunate enough to get to know the team and get on board just before the 3rd lockdown came into force.
I’m lucky to work on one of London’s most exciting regeneration projects, Borough Yards, in Southwark. It’s great that I’m gaining plenty of experience and work with a dynamic project team. Queensberry is appointed as Development Manager for this project and our role is to deliver the redevelopment of the dis-used railway arches next to Borough Markets into a new mixed use neighborhood.
We are creating 90,000 sq ft of new retail and restaurant space as well as a new 60,000 sq ft office development which will open as a state-of-the-art serviced office centre operated by The Office Group. The main works on site are set to complete in the summer with the first phase of the development opening this autumn. Alongside supporting the delivery of the final phase of the construction works, my role focuses on delivering the retail and restaurant space.
Retail delivery is a crucial phase of any retail led regeneration, it involves managing, overseeing and collaboratively working with the new tenants to ensure their interior fit-out meets the highest standards. I lead our design team in delivering the overall design vision for the development, briefing the retailers, reviewing and commenting on their proposals as well as tracking their fitting out on site. With so much change occurring in this sector I am continuously meeting pioneering entrepreneurs with new concepts. The level of creativity is astounding and responding rapidly to a new retail reality.
Like most people, I have found the last year tough but am very much looking forward to easing out of lockdown and to the completion of Borough Yards. It will be great to see this exciting development open later this year and I for one can’t wait to get back to socialising. Borough Yards will be one of the first places on my list of destinations to visit this autumn with my friends and new colleagues.
